Netball Lighting

A netball court requires a high level of light to provide good visibility for players, competition judges, umpires and team officials so that they can clearly see everything that is going on in a fast moving game or training area, and so that the athletes can produce their best possible results.

The relevant Australian Standards for netball and basketball lighting are “AS 2560.2.4 – 1986 Specific Recommendations – Lighting for outdoor netball and basketball.”

The Australian Standards (series 2560.4) contain the minimum recommended illuminance levels measured in lux for the lighting of outdoor netball and basketball courts according to whether the court is to be used for training versus competition levels of play or both. The minimum light level required for each standard of play measured as horizontal illuminance in lux is as follows:

Netball Training Light Level            100 lux

Club Competition Light Level          200 lux

Australian Rules Football Lighting

Since amateur and recreational football is often played in the evening players appreciate a good level of light which allows players to effectively train and refine their skills so that they are well prepared for their weekend matches. A basic requirement for illumination of a football field is that the ball is adequately illuminated at all times while in play.

The relevant Australian Standards for football oval lighting are “AS 2560.2.3 – 2007 Specific Applications – Lighting for football (all codes).”

The Australian Standards (series 2560.2.3) contains recommendations and requirements specific to the lighting of Australian Rules football. The standard deals with training and competition, and takes into consideration spectator viewing requirements.

The Standard contains information highlighting the maintained horizontal illuminance (lux) required for training and club competition at a recreational, amateur, semi-professional and professional level for Australian Rules football.

Lighting level for training and amateur play will be lower than for competition matches, especially in residential areas where sporting clubs need to be aware of neighbouring houses.

In the case of Amateur level play the Australian Standards specify:

  • a maintained average horizontal illuminance (Eh) of 50 lux, and
  • a minimum horizontal uniformity (U1 = E-average / E minimum) of 0.3.

In contrast for club competition and match practice the minimum requirement is

  • Eh = 100 lux
  • U1 of 0.5,
  • U2 (E max / E min) of 0.3, and
  • Maximum glare rating of 50.

For training light levels U2 and Glare are not applicable.

Brief

Moyston Public Parks had recently installed two 20 metre flood light towers on the west side of their Football Oval replacing two older 10 metre towers each with two 2000W Metal Halide lights. With limited power supply to the oval they were keen to consider LED lighting as a way of increasing light whilst reducing power consumption.

The LITE-BR-FL-480W LED Stadium Series Flood Light was selected as it is a good match to an aging 2000W Metal Halide Flood Light. Customer feedback suggests that our 480W LED Flood Light provides an improvement on lighting when compared to the older 2000W metal halide. See Port Whyndam Fuel Silo study and review.

In addition, Moystan Parks had had decided to replace three 1500W halogen flood lights on their netball courts with two LITE-BR-FL-480W LED Stadium Series Flood Lights plus install an additional 480W LED flood light in front of their clubrooms.

Results

The photo below of the football oval shows two LITE-BR-FL-480W 120° flood lights on each of the 20 metre towers on the West side showing excellent illumination of the oval. There are still the existing 1000W metal halides, two on each of the East side towers but one can see the additional brightness from the 480W LED sport oval lighting on the West side towers.
