Improvement of Bowling Green LED Lighting at Hayfield Bowls Club

We were approached by Hayfield Bowls Club to assist with their poor lighting down the center of their green. They had earlier installed four smaller general purpose LED flood lights down each side of their bowling green but the projection of the light due to the use of wide beam angle lights and low power was too inadequate to reach the centre lanes of the bowling green.

Whilst we would have liked to have done the job properly in the first place we were happy to help find a solution within their budget constraints without replacing the existing lights.

Hayfield Bowls had already installed an additional new 15m lighting pole at the centre of the Western end of the bowling green in the hope to light up the dim centre part of the bowling green. We went to work and ran half a dozen different LED lighting simulations on the bowling green using three different Sports LED flood light models, LITE-BR-FL2, LITE-SK-FL and LITE-EL-NED. Each of these LED Flood Light models come with various pros and cons in terms of weight, beam angle availability and lumen output.

The aim was to simulate LED Flood light projection down the centre of the bowling green in the range of 150 to 200 lux. To achieve this we ended up using 2 x medium 60° beam 400W LED Flood Sports Lights (LITE-EL-NED-400) pointed closer to the bowling green half closer to the pole, and 1 x narrow 22° beam 960W LED Sports Flood Light (LITE-EL-NED-960) pointing towards the opposite end of the bowling green.

The results were reasonably good as shown in the LED Lighting Bowling Green simulation below and the photos. Of course the centre of the bowling green is now really well lit up whereas the sides are a bit dim. Not what we usually like to see but the club was satisfied with the results with Peter Leslie from Hayfield Bowls informing us,

"Finally we have the new lights installed which is a story in itself. The brightness of the new lights tend to make the existing lights a bit dull. As you indicated we will need to play around with the angles to get the best result which we intend to do over the next week. The 1st image was taken with only the new lights on. Overall we are happy with the result given the restrictions and our limited budget. On behalf of the club I wish to thank you for the advice and assistance you have provided, it was very much appreciated."
